Ukiyo-e Girls Collection
Term:Jun. 29, 2019 (Sat) - Aug. 25 (Sun)

Gather the beautiful ladies from the Edo and Meiji periods!

The Kokugakuin University Museum is pleased to present its newly acquired ukiyo-e collections for the first time. As the first exhibition in the series, the exhibition introduces the masterpieces of bijin-ga, the portraits of beautiful women, from the Edo and Meiji periods. The exhibition aims to articulate the transitions in the genealogy of bijin-ga through the works of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1708–1861), a popular painter in the ukiyo-e world in the end of the Edo period; Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), a representative bijin-ga artist in the Meiji period; and others. The exhibition also focuses on the landscapes and artifacts that appear in the painting with beautiful women. Please enjoy the customs and cultures from Edo to Meiji as well.
