A Word from the Director
The foundation of archaeological studies at Kokugakuin University finds its roots in the Archeology Gallery established by archaeologist Kiyoyuki Higuchi in 1928. This was 90 years ago, and Higuchi was then a student. The journey of his envisioning and realizing the establishment of the Gallery was not documented and is therefore unknown. However, it is easy to imagine that it is because his outstanding collection and passion for archaeology were so well recognized by his then supervisor, Professor Ryuzo Torii, and other members of the university that this daunting undertaking of opening the Gallery became a reality. Since its inception, the Gallery had been instrumental in advancing archaeological studies at the university.
The objective of this special exhibition marking the 90th anniversary of the founding of Kokugakuin University Museum is to overview its history and showcase the specimens that we have collected through our academic activities, and thereby communicate to the public our vision and initiatives for the future of the museum.
