从久远的古代开始,人们就借助寄托着他们信仰之“心”的“物”,对根植于日本的诸神进行祭祀活动。在此,我们将以日本各地的神社—信仰体现之地—为中心所举行的祭祀活动为焦点,来阐明前述的“物”与寄托其中的“心”之间的关联。并且,也要逼近那些展现着每个时代或每个地方的斑斓姿态的日本文化,以及那作为日本文化根基的神道的特有风貌。
