Taking joy in blossoming flowers, and feeling sad when they fall. Remembering one s beloved upon seeing the moon, and lamenting at daybreak that one is unable to see them.
Experiencing beauty, nostalgia, and longing when coming into contact with nature is something that has been fostered by the Japanese culture maintained and passed down by people throughout history. In this culture that has created Japanese people s emotional sensibilities, waka poetry has played an important role. The acts of compose, writing down, and studying this poetry have produced and developed waka culture, which has continually been passed down by poets through the ages.
This exhibition aims to rediscover the appeal of waka poetry though waka books spanning from ancient times to the modern period. The fluidity of waka texts’ scripts and the elegance of their designs share with us the feelings towards waka of people during these eras. However, what is fascinating about waka varies depending on the time and person, and if we change how we look at these poems, new aspects come to light. In this exhibition, viewers are invited to enjoy this kaleidoscopic splendor of waka culture.
