 古くから人々は、信仰の「心」が込められた「モノ」を用いて、日本に根差した神々へのまつりを行ってきた。ここでは、日本各地の神社―信仰が表現される場―を中心に行われてきたまつりに焦点を当て、そこで用いられる「モノ」と、その中に込められた「心」との関係を明らかにする。そして、時代ごと、あるいは場所ごとに多様な姿を見せる日本文化とその基層である神道の特質にも迫る。
