Exhibition Overview
The Izu Islands and peninsula are blessed with a rich though harsh natural environment that derives from the volcanic belt, where ancient people came to regard the natural phenomena of eruptions and forming of islands as works of the gods. Such divine acts were considered with importance by the ancient state, and even after the Middle Ages amid growing association of Shintoism and Buddhism, it was disseminated as Engi or story of the origin that told the genesis myth of the islands which prevails to this day. On the other hand, since the reign of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the God of Mishima was also revered as a guardian deity of the warriors, and the faith spread to various parts of Japan.
