Okinawan Studies at Kokugakuin

Term:May. 19th - Jul. 23th 2022

We have English explanation part in this exhibition.

On May 15, 1972, Okinawa Prefecture, which had been under U.S.
occupation after the Asia-Pacific War ended, reverted to Japan.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of that reversion. In 1872 –
150 years ago – the Ryukyu Domain was established after the
Ryukyu Kingdom (the monarchy which formerly ruled present-day
Okinawa) was deprived of its diplomatic rights by Japan’s Meiji
Government. The Domain, however, was quickly abolished,
becoming Okinawa Prefecture in 1879, which remains its designation
to date. “Okinawan Studies” is an academic discipline focused on the
history and culture of Okinawa, which are significantly different
from those of Japan, having the Ryukyu Kingdom as its predecessor.
Kokugakuin University was deeply involved in the establishment of
the Studies, and in commemoration of these two milestone
anniversaries, the University’s Museum decided to hold a special
exhibition, entitled “The Journey of Ryukyuan/Okinawan Studies
at Kokugakuin.” This event features not only the history and culture
of Okinawa, but also revisits the involvement of the University in
Okinawan Studies.
