Evil: Those Who Do Not Conform

Term:Jun. 1, 2018 (Fri) - Aug. 5, (Sun)

We have English explanation part in this exhibition.

What is "evil"? However, the meaning of "evil" is always fluctuating, depending on the time period and place. Therefore, for us to truly know "evil," we must look back and ask what was spoken about using the word "evil."
Accordingly, in this exhibition we will focus on "惡" (aku), the character for evil, which originated in ancient China, and rethink its original meaning. Further, we will examine how the Japanese people received the character for evil, and whether it gained new meaning. We will undoubtedly discover that "evil" did not just refer to inauspicious people, but that it had unexpectedly positive sides, and that those in power fabricated images of "evil."
To know evil is practice for sensing the whereabouts of evil today. It certainly exists here, hence our recommending "Evil" to those of you who visit our museum.
